Featured Article: The Fly Fishing Basics You Need to Know
If you are new to fly fishing, first you will want to equip your tackle bag with the basics that you will need for your first fly fishing trip.
Your Basic Fly Fishing Tackle
You will need a carbon fibre rod of at least weight 6 and if you intend to catch big fish, you will need a heavier one. You will also need a fly line, to place the fly in the correct place in the water, and a leader, which connects the fly line to the main line.
You will also need some flies. You would be amazed at the huge variety of flies that are available, but you don't need to know about the various different types to begin with. All you need to know is that you can use wet flies, or dry flies. You will also need a net, and it should be long enough to reach the fish you catch and big enough to hold them.
If you intend to keep the fish to eat, you will need a priest, which will enable you to kill the fish quickly and easily. It may be advisable to take one with you anyway, in case the fish is badly injured, so you can put it out of its misery quickly. Lastly, you will need some waders. These come in various different types and thicknesses and the ones you choose will depend on the weather where you intend to fish.
Before You Go On Your First Fly Fishing Trip
One of the most important fly fishing basics is learning a few of the fly fishing knots you will need to use. It is advisable to learn and practise some of these knots at home first. Also it would be wise to keep a print out, or a book containing some of the basic fly fishing knots in your tackle bag, that way you don't get stuck if you forget.
Once you have learned the basic knots, you will need to make sure you know how to put your rod together. Again, this is something you will want to practise at home first, and once you've put it all together, you may want to practise casting at home too.
Now You Are Almost Ready to Go On Your First Fishing Trip
Learning the fishing basics may seem like a lot of work, but you will be glad you prepared yourself before you go on your first trip. Learning to tie knots and cast in advance will make your first fly fishing experience far more enjoyable. The last thing is to make sure you have any necessary permits needed to fish at your chosen venue and you are all set to enjoy your first fly fishing adventure. Lastly, don't forget to take a camera with you so that you can impress your friends and family with your huge catches.
