Captain's Corner: Get up early to go after large tarpon (St. Petersburg Times)

**What's hot:** Tarpon have come early and continue to improve. Bridges and
passes have held them, and now large ones are migrating along our west coast.
Start early in the morning. Easterly winds will have the gulf surface flat,
allowing rolling tarpon to be seen for a long distance. They can be as close
as inside swim markers. Definite pathways are followed with bait, tides and
water depth helping develop a pattern. Figure out this pattern and set up.
**Best opportunity:** Fish coming straight to you are better than at an angle.
Tarpon are lazy and want food at their level. Pick a shallow area providing
good visibility and time to prepare a cast. Lead it far enough to have the fly
at his level before stripping.
**Going big:** Hooking a large tarpon on a fly might be the greatest thrill in
fly fishing. The key to shortening a fight is keeping the fish off balance,
not allowing it to rest. Keeping your rod tip low, apply pressure in the
direction opposite the fish's movement. When the tarpon swims to the right,
apply pressure to the left ...
I am looking into buying my first fly fishing outfit but I have a few questions?
I know that i'll be using this outfit on lake planted trout and maybe large-mouthed bass at some of our local park lakes.(live in san bernardino, california) And maybe big bear/arrow head lakes. What goes on my reel, backing, fly line,tippet? First time to setup and not sure. Dio
I would recommend a 7wt medium to fast action rod, with a minimum size of 9.6ft, this will allow easier casting and fish control. A a 6wt would be fine, but since your just starting out a 7wt will allow you to apply more pressure and handle those larger stocked rainbows.
When you become more experienced you might want to move onto a 6wt or even a 5wt.
For line setup it goes;
Backing-standard 20lb dacron wil be fine for starting out.
Fly line- buy a Weight Forward (WF) taper,as it will allow for easier casting. Buy the best line you can afford its vital as that's what carries your fly, good brands are rio, airflo, scientific anglers, Cortland.
Then you need a tapered leader of about 7lb test, a tippet is added when the leader becomes too short.
